Since I was a child, I've always had an interest in odd things and little known facts. Although the picture in the logo has granite stones in it that resemble Stonehenge, it is a picture of a real glen near a lake. The small floating cloud-like object floating in the background under the 'LLC' is an island. The picture was taken in 1987. The only thing missing from the Arthurian legends is the oak trees.
Now for those who don't know about the Arthurian legends, King Arthur was the central character. Arthur’s mentor was the wizard - Merlin. Until modern times - movies and print - Merlin was probably the most well known wizard in the world. For the most part the legends of Merlin, Arthur, the Knights of the Round Table, and Camelot, were passed down by word of mouth and through the work of bard's. The stories were meant to teach as well as entertain. The lessons were about life and a code of ethics called Chivalry. In the end, as Arthur lay dying, the Lady of the Lake sent her representatives to bring him back to the island of Avalon. Much of western culture is directly traceable back to this code and how it was implemented. Although the underlying message, that a man should behave honorably, is very inspiring and very applicable to running a business, it doesn't tell you how the logo came about.
Merlin is linked to Stonehenge through the popular belief that the druids built Stonehenge. It has often been pointed out that Merlin was also the title of the chief druid. So here we have a direct link between a wizard - someone who studies and applies scientific principles - with Stonehenge - one of the world's largest and oldest instruments. My background covers a lot of years of instrumentation. Two symbols linked with the druids were oak trees and the lightning bolt. I don't have any oak trees in the logo. There are none growing in the area of northern New England where the picture was taken. The lightning bolt - a symbol for intuition - is also a symbol for electricity. It isn't easy to catch a lightning bolt in a photograph.
Ultimately then if there was a link between New England and Stonehenge, everything would coalesce. There is a link. There are over forty prehistoric sites in New England where Stonehenge type structures have been discovered. All things taken together, the logo holds a lot of ties to who I am and what I'm trying to accomplish. I'm someone who studies and applies science with an eye towards benefitting everyone. I seek to behave honorably with all people. Finally, the calm and relaxing feel of the glen is the feeling that I want to inspire in those who use my service. The job is going to go well, things will work as they should, and we'll get done according to plan.
