Programming PLC's and SLC's hasn't changed much over the years. The most popular programming language is still ladder logic.
Although there has been several new instructions added. Networking has changed quite a bit during the same time frame. Ethernet is now the biggest seller for communications between processors and HMI's. PID control has improved over the years. Advanced mathematical instructions have expanded the capabilities of programmable controllers such that they can now replace most meters
and displays. Chart recorders have mostly been replaced by data collection systems.
Well so much for the walk down memory lane. Currently, I'm working mainly with Rockwell systems. I have done HMI's with Wonderware; but it's been awhile. I also work with CTC screens. They are a bit less expensive than some of the Rockwell HMI's, and they are not difficult to set up. The newer models also program direct from an internet browser. For the most part, I can program any controller. It generally takes me about two weeks to become proficient with a new software package.
